Spring is in the Air

Posted on March 20th, 2019

With more sunny days in March, April and May, there will be a lot to experience this spring in Benzie County.

Mary Carroll, President of Make It Benzie exclaims, “We are so excited about everything that’s happening this spring in Benzie County. From celebrating the coming of spring with fun Crystal Mountain events through the end of March, to the trees and forests in bloom, and green grass on golf courses, this area a beautiful place for hiking, biking, golfing and fun! We are happy to offer the best of the outdoors and more in Benzie County. Make it Benzie! this spring and call us at 800-882-5801 to find out more.”

Crystal Mountain continues to celebrate the end of the snow season with events throughout each weekend in March. At the end of March, Spring Break is front and center with lodging packages and kids’ activities every day from March 24 through April 6.

Starting in April, biking and hiking pick up throughout the county as greenery starts to show and new life emerges on hiking paths and trails. Benzie has over 100 miles of biking and hiking trails.

While on a hike, discover over 100 species of birds that migrate in the spring to and through Benzie County. Keep your eye out for beautiful woodland wildflowers in bloom such as Trillium, Trout lily, Spring Beauties, Blood Root, Dutchman’s Breeches, Wild Bleeding Heart and more. In Late May through June, the dunes burst into bloom with Wood Lilies, Pitcher’s Thistle, Red Windflower and White Camus. Enjoy the beauty of Lake Michigan’s shoreline and catch a sunset or two while you’re in Elberta and Frankfort. For art lovers, see Michigan Legacy Art Park, a 30-acre beautiful preserve art park within the grounds of Crystal Mountain featuring over 50 sculptures, poetry stones, natural woods and spectacular views.

If you’re a biker, The Betsie Valley Trail is perfect with both paved and hard aggregate surfaces. The Betsie Valley Trail runs along an old railway route for 22 miles from Frankfort to Thompsonville. Starting in Frankfort, you can easily travel to Beulah, about 8 miles. While in Beulah, stop for a bite to eat at one of the restaurants, including Cold Creek Inn, Hungry Tummy L’chayim Delicatessen, & Lucky Dog Bar & Grille. If you’re adventurous and want to continue to travel the remaining miles, hop back on your bike and go for a spin on a hard-aggregate surface through forests and fields all the way to Thompsonville. Other trails in other parts of the county include The Betsie River Pathway, an easy to moderate trail winding through the Pere Marquette National Forest, and The Lake Ann Pathway, a 6-mile picturesque forest trail with easy to moderate terrain and views of lakes, bogs, and the Platte River.

Golf begins throughout the county as the weather gets warmer. You’ll have your choice of layout at seven different courses – Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club in Arcadia, Champion Hill and Crystal Lake Golf Club in Beulah, Pinecroft Golf Course in Benzonia, Interlochen Golf Course in Interlochen, and Mountain Ridge and Betsie Valley at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville

Morels by the handful (and wild leeks too!) - the forests of Benzie County boast great mushrooming in the spring.

Mushroom hunting for morels is an obsession from late-April through May and can be found if you have patience and a keen eye. Check out Make It Benzie’s morel mushroom hunting guide for tips on how to hunt and find mushrooms. Here’s your first tip: “Morel mushrooms tend to grow around old Apple orchards, dead Elm trees and logs. Living White Ash and Maple are also common areas,” according to the guide.

And by the end of May, fun outdoor events include the, Crystal Cup Golf Tournament, Michigan Beer & Brat Festival, Micros on the Mountain, and the North Mitten Half Marathon, 10k and 5k.

Throughout the Spring, Crystal Mountain’s Crystal Spa continues to celebrate their 10th anniversary with specials, including Crystal Spa Days from April 13 – May 23, with special pricing on massages, body treatments and facials. (Note: Crystal Spa will be closed April 15 – 17 for renovating).
