JANUARY

Moonlight Snowshoe Tour at Michigan Legacy Art Park
Thompsonville, Crystal Mountain
January 9, 2020

Come out and enjoy the quiet and serenity of a guided snowshoe tour under the full moon and along forest trails at Michigan Legacy Art Park in Thompsonville. Led by volunteers Harriet Wall and Vance Marshall, participants will have an opportunity to learn about the Art Park and its history, as well as get a wildly new perspective of the over 50 art works in the collection while exploring the peaceful woods at night.

The FREE tour will meet at the Art Park Trailhead at 6:45 p.m. The tour group will depart at 7 p.m. You will snowshoe around the nature trail (approximately one mile) with the tour which will last about 60-90 minutes, depending on the pace and the weather. The tour will end back at the Trailhead and parking lot.

Winter Trails Day

Winter Trails Day offers children and adults new to snow sports the chance to try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing for free, and to discover the great fitness and social benefits with these easy-to-learn winter sports.

Enjoy a free 2-Hour Trail Pass and rentals available from:

• 2pm-4pm
• 3pm-5pm

Iron Fish Fat Chance Fat Tire Bike Race
Crystal Mountain, Thompsonville

Fat Chance is the staple of fat biking in Northern Michigan, and is back again for another legendary race at Crystal Mountain with new and familiar faces. The race will be held on the Otter Trail loop. The new 90 Minute Category Trail Loop course is 2 miles of high speed wide trail and a tight twisting single track section.  The 45 Minute Category Trail Loop will be all wide-open beginner friendly trail perfect for the fat bike enthusiast just getting into racing. Each lap in will add its own new fat tire challenges. Helmets are required for rider safety. All races start at 10am. Link

FEBRUARY

Annual Winterfest in Benzie County

Benzie County’s Annual Winterfest in Beulah features a Chili Cook Off, horse drawn wagon rides, Winterfest Parade and majestic fireworks over Crystal Lake. Zany children’s activities include frozen turkey bowling, frozen fish toss, snowball target competition and more.

Betsie Bay Frozen 5K
Elberta / Frankfort

For the heartiest among us, the Benzie Bay Frozen 5K draws crazy runners and walkers who are willing to face 10-degree temperatures and 30-mph gusts off Lake Michigan. The race is presented by Benzie Community Water Council & Stormcloud Brewing Company . The course starts at the top of Elberta’s beautiful Lake Michigan lookout, continues down the hill through Elberta, around the bend along Betsie Bay via scenic M-22, then heads down Main Street in Frankfort, with a finish at the other end of downtown, just before you reach Frankfort lighthouse. All ages are welcome with a $20 Pre-Registered Race Fee (Pre-Registration guarantees an event shirt)! This year, proceeds from the 10th Annual Betsie Bay Frozen 5K will focus on supporting local and global community-focused projects. Nastar Midwest Championships

February 29 & March 1
Crystal Mountain will host the Liberty Mutual Insurance NASTAR Midwest Championships on February 29 – March 1, 2020. The winners of the Race of Champions will be awarded prize money for the first time in NASTAR regional championships history! The two-day event will see the fastest racers in each age, gender and ability group from Saturday’s qualifying races advance to the Race of Champions on Sunday. This dual head-to-head handicapped race will be a single-elimination event with the final four racers in the men’s and women’s races splitting a share of the $5,000* cash purse. Afterwards, the ever-popular Friends and Family Team Races will take place. The Liberty Mutual Insurance NASTAR Midwest Regional Championships are open to all recreational racers and no qualification is required.

This exciting event features celebrity pacesetter, two time Olympic Super G medalist and U.S. Ski Team alum, Andrew Weibrecht, live music, parties and fun racing! Discounted lift tickets are available to NASTAR participants and guests. Link

Annual North Mitten Half Marathon, 10k & 5k

Kick off summer with a running start at Crystal Mountain’s 5th Annual Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k race! The North Mitten Half Marathon, 10k and 5k is a combination of paved roads, dirt roads and trails. The North Mitten route consists of primarily flat, open trails on Crystal Mountain property and will not climb the mountain. Both races will start and finish at the slope side tent near the Crystal Clipper chairlift. This is a great spring race for beginners and experienced runners. Runners must register online (registration now open). Entry fee is non-refundable. Michigan Legacy Art Park Golf Classic

Bike Benzie UP North Road Tour & Gravel Race

The Benzie Sunrise Rotary Club is proud to present another great biking event for 2020. For road riders there will be a new 15-mile route, along with the 30- and 45-mile routes and the metric century—all routes showcasing the stunning beauty of northern Michigan. For more adventurous riders a new gravel race includes a short course of 20 miles or a long course of 36 miles. Benzie and Manistee Counties have some great gravel roads, and these courses will challenge both new and experienced gravel riders. This event is a day to celebrate bikes, raise money, and promote healthy lifestyles in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

In addition to the best bike course in the state, the event has rest stops with homemade local baked goods, refreshments, and enthusiastic volunteers to cheer you on. Frankfort 48 – Film Contest

Aspiring filmmakers and those with photography and film interests are invited to come to Frankfort, Michigan on June 18 for the 4th annual Frankfort 48! Participants will create a 3-to-5-minute film celebrating the beauty of Northern Michigan. Participants will have 48 hours to conceive their ideas, scout locations, film, edit, and present their masterpieces. Prizes will be awarded to the top filmmakers. The public is invited to attend the film showing, featuring the winning films, on Saturday, June 20 (Fee to attend). One of the premier Michigan golfing events, The Michigan PGA Women’s Open features some of the best professional and amateur women golfers from around Michigan and across the country. Bring your friends and play with a Pro. The Pro-Am is a 36-hole scramble, featuring two divisions: Women’s Only, and Mixed/Men’s teams. This annual Pro-Am event at Crystal Mountain kicks off the 2020 Michigan PGA Women’s Open Tournament

During this PGA event, they will welcome some of the top players in women’s golf from throughout Michigan and around the country to their beautiful Mountain Ridge course. Over the last decade, Crystal Mountain along with its committed partners have created an event that consistently attracts current and former LPGA players, club professionals and top amateurs from across the nation and around the world. In six out of the past nine years, the three-round championship winners have been determined on the final hole of regulation, or during a final playoff.
