Benzie....A Four Season Playground!

Spring brings wildflowers and morel mushrooms to the forests. The birds return as the lakes thaw and fish begin to head downriver. Spring is a great time to hunt for petoskey stones along Lake Michigan.

Summer Fun is full of warm air and sunshine. The lakes warm up and the woods are full of wildlife. We celebrate our country's independance, play in the water, and breathe in the fresh air. In the evening, we sit around a campfire at the lake's edge and gaze up at the Milky Way. The end of summer brings the Coho back into the rivers from the big lake.

When Fall arrives, there is still much to do in the Benzie area. September is usually still warm enough to play in the lakes. It's a great time for hiking or bicycling and exploring our area. The leaves change to create spectacular colors against the blue sky and aqua marine waters. We celebrate fall with our carved pumpkins and other fun festivals.

Winter Fun  brings fluffy snow to play in. Yes, it's cold; but how great it is to be outdoors, still on the hiking trails, but now on showshoes or skis. We are home to one of the best ski resorts in the midwest, Crystal Mountain. Benzie also has 135 miles of groomed trails for snowmobilers. We celebrate this season in February with Winterfest.

Gravity Hill - A 'mystery not to miss'

In addition to the fabulous outdoor adventures, you can find an adventure of a mysterious kind too! Take a drive out to Benzie's own "Gravity Hill", just a few miles southeast of Frankfort & Elberta. You can put your car in neutral on the downhill slope and your car will slowly roll, but it will roll backwards, uphill! These natural gravity hills are found in hilly locations where a distant horizon is not visible as a reference point, which produces the optical illusion that a gentle downhill slope is, in fact, an uphill slope. This is a "mystery" not to miss!
