Discover Michigan Snow Sports Month

Whereas, Winters in Michigan offer an abundance of enjoyable recreational outdoor activities, including skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice skating; and,

Whereas, Michigan is home to more than 36 ski resorts that are within a two-hour or less drive from anywhere in the state, unlike any other state in the nation; and,

Whereas, Michigan ski resorts boast a combined total of 42 areas with over 200 chairlifts, 840 runs, 40 terrain parks and thousands of miles of groomed cross-country trails; and,

Whereas, The citizens of Michigan work tirelessly to uphold the strong outdoor recreation heritage and winter tourism within this state as it is home to a distinguished winter sports history and to the U.S. National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame; and,

Whereas, During the month of January, Michigan residents and visitors are encouraged to learn a new snow sport and take advantage of the sports that only a Michigan winter can provide;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 2010 Discover Michigan Snow Sports Month in Michigan. Pure Michigan is our state's motto, and there is nothing more Pure Michigan than enjoying a favorite recreational activity in the snow.
